ABERTURAS E COROS DE ÓPERA – SONS DA ‘LIBERDADE’

ALiCE, in collaboration with the 3 R&D units, CEFT, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM, are sponsors of the Researchers’ Concert: ABERTURAS E COROS DE ÓPERA.
This concert will take place on November 20th, 2024, at FEUP’s auditorium (21:30 h) and is performed by the choir and orchestra of the Academia and City Opera (OAC). Access to the Auditorium is free.
"SONS DA LIBERDADE" seeks to express the freedom and its various declensions, through orchestral and choral-orchestral pieces that span much of the 19th century, the century of people's freedom. A reality that manifested itself in the form of struggles for independence, in the form of struggles for the granting of rights and freedoms or in the form of struggles for national unification.

Adélio Mendes appointed member of CNCTI

Prof. Adélio Mendes, senior researcher of LEPABE and leader of the Processes, Products and Energy group, was appointed member of the CNCTI - National Council for Science, Technology and Innovation.
The CNCTI is a Portuguese Government advisory body in matters of science, technology and innovation, which works
alongside members of the Government responsible for economy, science and technology areas. The CNCTI is responsible for collaborating in the development and support of the national scientific and technological system, in the internationalization of Portuguese science and the promotion of the Portuguese language as a working language in science, ensuring scientific advice and promoting transversal and interministerial coordination of science and technology policies.

Science & Technology Week 2024

ALiCE and the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department (DEQB), in collaboration with its research units (CEFT, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM), promotes in 2024, within the scope of Science and Technology Week, a set of debates on emerging areas of Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Bioengineering aimed at the general public and, in particular, at high school and university teachers and students.
Each of these debates will be focused on a transversal thematic that will feature the participation of invited experts from the industry, researchers from DEQB and R&D units and representatives of DEQB students.

Alumni of LEPABE wins ERC Advanced Grant

LEPABE congratulates Doctor Paula Mendes, former PhD student of LEPABE supervised by Prof. Carlos Costa, from the Processes, Products and Energy group, for the attribution of an ERC Advanced Grant 2023 from the European Research Council, under the theme: New frontiers in glycan recognition and detection.
Currently, she is Professor at the University of Birmingham, and her research interests lies in the interdisciplinary area of nanoscience and nanotechnology, in particular on the development of novel methods for controlling the structure and functionality of materials at the molecular and nanometer levels.

LEPABE member appointed national COST delegate

Belmira Neto, senior researcher from the Environmental Sciences and Technologies group of LEPABE, was appointed NATIONAL DELEGATE OF THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE OF COST - European Network for Multiple View Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment - MultiViewLCSA. COST is a European cooperation initiative that promotes the creation of research and innovation networks, facilitating collaboration between scientists, researchers and professionals from different disciplines and countries.

Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality of the Portuguese Chemical Industry by 2050

Professor Fernando Martins, senior researcher at LEPABE from the group of Process Systems Engineering, moderated the session under the theme “From Decarbonisation Scenarios to Concrete Projects: Opportunities and Challenges in the Decarbonization of the Chemical Industry (the Companies' Perspective)”, with the participation of Hychem + A4F/Biotrend, Bondalti Chemicals, Repsol Polímeros, and Galp.
This session took place on July 3rd, and was organised by APQuímica, as part of the launch of the Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality of the Portuguese Chemical Industry by 2050, aiming to identify, discuss, and implement the different scenarios and decarbonisation pathways for the sector that will contribute to this goal.

LEPABE member joined EFCE section

Last month, the junior researcher Dr. Cláudio Rocha, from the Environmental Sciences and Technologies group of LEPABE, joined the EFCE Section Early Career Chemical Engineers, a European association that is part of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering.
This group brings together young chemical engineers from both academia and industry, aiming to promote collaboration with other professionals in the field and contribute to the development of new ideas and practices in chemical engineering.

Book: Fragrances in the Environment

Dr. Nuno Ratola and Dr. Vera Homem are editors of the book "Fragrances in the Environment", volume 128 of "The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry" series, published by Springer.
This book focuses on the environmental impact of the fragrance industry, exploring its connection to pollution, resource consumption, and sustainability. Written by a multidisciplinary team of expert contributors, and considering its scope, this book is an essential tool not only for scholars and researchers in academia and industry but also for other stakeholders and decision-makers interested in the field of fragrances and their ecotoxicology, as well as environmental impacts.

IJUP 2024 distinguishes researcher of LEPABE

The 17th edition of IJUP – Meeting of young researchers of the University of Porto distinguished João Lemos, a Master student working with Dr. Carmen Rodrigues and Prof. Miguel Madeira, from the Environmental Sciences and Technologies group of LEPABE, as one of the 4 most relevant works in engineering area.
Among the 68 students distinguished, João Lemos presented his work on the utilization of advanced oxidation processes in the treatment of wastewaters from wine distilleries, and refers that this initiative “was a great incentive to improve my soft verbal communication skills in English, an important skill that we don’t always have the opportunity to practice.”

Work by LEPABE team awarded Best Paper

The article "A Potential Valorization Strategy of Wine Industry by-Products and Their Application in Cosmetics—Case Study: Grape Pomace and Grapeseed" was recipient of the Molecules 2022 Best Paper Award (2nd Prize), attributed by the journal Molecules (MDPI). The paper was selected among 9068 papers published in the journal, based on the overall evaluation of the originality and significance of the papers, citations, and downloads.
This paper resulted from the work developed by Prof. Lúcia Santos and her team, from the Environmental Sciences and Technologies group of LEPABE. In this paper, the authors create and develop a face moisturizing cream, mainly composed of natural ingredients, and increase its value, by the addition of by-products from the winery industry, in order to valorize agricultural by-products while creating a more appealing product, increasingly sought after by consumers.
