LEPABE PhD student Sara Ramos, supervised by Prof. Lúcia Santos and Dr. Vera Homem, and AGRONAUT project researcher Filipe Rocha, supervised by Dr. Vera Homem, were awarded Best Poster presentation with their works “Extraction Methodologies for UV-filters and Synthetic Musk Compounds from Soils and Tomatoes” and “Assessing the Levels of Siloxanes and Musks in Sewage Sludges for a Sustainable and Safe Use in Soils”, respectively. The prizes were awarded at the 19th European Meeting on Environmental Chemistry (EMEC19), held from 3rd to 6th of December 2018 in Royat, near Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Prof. Sebastião Feyo was awarded the "Gold Medal of the Order of Engineers"

Prof. Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo, member of LEPABE and former Rector of the University of Porto, was honoured with the Gold Medal of the Order of Engineers (OE), "in recognition for the high merit demonstrated in the exercise of his profession throughout his diversified career as an Engineer, Professor and as senior OE official.
The event took place on November 24th, during the commemorations of the National Engineer's Day 2018.

A new edition of the Science & Technology Week 2018 is taking place at the Department of Chemical Engineering with the participation of LEPABE. Till the end of this week, and on the motto: "Technological advances in emerging areas of chemical, environmental and biotechnology engineering" we welcome high school and university students into our research laboratories. LEPABE Junior Researcher present at WHO workshop

Sofia Sousa, LEPABE Junior Researcher, participated as specialist in the panel session “The Urban Health Initiative – UHI: Assessing the health and economic impacts of sectorial action against air pollution”, organized by the World Health Organization.
This took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 29th, as part of the WHO’s First Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health.

LEPABE assistant researcher António Ferreira was highlighted by U.Porto Inovação due to his work on Mesoscale Oscillatory Flow Reactors (Meso-OFR).
Developed at LEPABE/FEUP and CEB/U. Minho, Meso-OFR is a novel technology for process intensification. The technology has been applied in continuous crystallization of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) in collaboration with pharmaceutical industry.

Nuno Guimarães and Rita Santos, LEPABE Researchers, participated in the TWINNING Coordinators Day that took place in Brussels, Belgium, on October 17th and was organized by the European Commission.
The meeting involved all coordinators of approved TWINNING projects, namely project DELNAM – “Strengthening the research area of delivery of nucleic acid mimics (NAMS) into bacteria to fight the antibiotic crisis”, led by Prof. Nuno Azevedo.

LEPABE was present at BESTPRAC COST action

José Avelino Silva, LEPABE manager for science and technology, participated in the BESTPRAC Training School (4-6 June) and Workshop (24-25 September) in Belgrade, Serbia.
BESTPRAC is a COST network that gathers people working at universities and research-driven institutions who are carrying out different tasks to support research projects. This COST action aimed to develop best practices and share knowledge related to EU-funded research projects, namely Horizon 2020 and beyond.

LEPABE's PhD student tested a new PEC prototype at the German Aerospace Center (DLR)

António Vilanova, LEPABE's PhD student supervised by Prof. Adélio Mendes, was at DRL (Cologne - Germany) in the end of August to test a new photoeletrochemical cell prototype developed at LEPABE.
They used the solar concentrator "SoCRatus", developed by the Institute of Solar Research, to test a module of 4 photoeletrochemical cells for clean production of hydrogen directly from solar energy, gathering important results for the commercial viability of this technology.

LEPABE assistant researcher was featured in the 27th edition of "Perspetivas"

LEPABE assistant researcher Luísa Andrade,was featured in the 27th edition of "Perspetivas", a supplement of "Público", a national newspaper.
Her team, led by Prof. Adélio Mendes, works on the development of PSCs - perovskite solar cells, focusing on their stability under environment conditions and on replacing the commonly used noble metals (like gold) with less expensive carbon materials.

Keep your seeds bug-free!

During storage, cereals and beans can be destroyed by insects or contaminated by fungi. A team led by LEPABE's Senior Researcher Prof. Margarida Bastos has identified a mixture of natural compounds (essential oils) that can keep the stored goods bug-free for months, without need for synthetic pesticides. The team also developed a simple device for controlled release of the compound during the grain storage period.

LEPABE team highlighted by ASPIC

A team led by Prof. Maria do Carmo Pereira, member of LEPABE, was highlighted by ASPIC - Portuguese Association for Cancer Research. The study about the development of a nanovehicle for treatment of glioblastoma multiforme was published in "International Journal of Pharmaceutics" and intends to increase the therapeutic efficacy of temozolomide in the treatment of this malignant brain tumour.

Visblue spin-off in RTP3 TECH3 program

Visblue is a spin-off of University of Porto and University of Aarhus (Denmark), created by Prof. Adélio Mendes (LEPABE/FEUP), Anders Bentien (UAarhus), Søren Bødker (DK) and Morten Madsen (DK). Visblue batteries are compact and allow more storage of solar energy with minimal environmental impact.

Nuno Ratola participates in atmospheric monitoring expedition to Andes Mountains

LEPABE's Research Fellow Nuno Ratola was a visiting researcher at CETAM - Centro de Tecnologías Ambientales of the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria (Valparaíso, Chile), under Project REDES. He participated in a scientific expedition to the NUNATAK monitoring platform in the Andes Mountains in the scope of his research on atmospheric pollution.

Amnis Pura, a new spin-off with LEPABE's signature

Amnis Pura, Lda is a LEPABE/FEUP spin-off created in March, 2018 by Dr. Paulo Ribeirinha, Frederico Relvas and Prof. Adélio Mendes, all members of LEPABE. The first steps towards creating this company began in 2016, taking advantage of the know-how acquired in the context of EU-funded project "PEMbeyond".
The company designs and produces tailored solutions for hydrogen production and purification for chemical and energy industries. The company is also involved in the areas of low temperature fuel cell systems.
Exceptional approval rate for LEPABE's projects in FCT 2017 call

The last FCT call for scientific projects had an excellent outcome for LEPABE's researchers. LEPABE was granted 21 projects as project leader and 11 as partner institution, resulting in € 5 million funding for the next 3 years. The 64 % approval rate achieved in this call highlights the excellence of LEPABE's work.
The direction of LEPABE wishes to acknowledge the efforts made by its researchers in this highly competitive call.
DELNAM project highlighted in "Mentes que brilham"

Television program "Mentes que brilham" in Porto Canal found out about the research work led by Prof. Nuno Azevedo at LEPABE, about the bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This project aims to develop a novel therapeutic approach to solve bacterial resistance to antibiotics through the delivery of antibacterial nucleic acid mimics into bacterial biofilms and cells within the human body.

Within the scope of Redes IX project "Programa de Promoción de la Universidad Argentina", between LEPABE - FEUP and UTN - Facultad Regional Córdoba - CITeQ, a three module e-learning course was held on April 11th on the topic of Wastes and Production of Liquid and Gaseous Biofuels, taught by LEPABE researcher Prof. Joana Maia Dias. The course was directed at PhD students and teachers of the Argentine institution and raised a lot of interest from the participants.

LEPABE congratulates Research Fellow Dr. Nuno Azevedo for winning a European project under Twinning call with a total investment of 960 000 EUR. HotPur project focuses on the development of reactive polyurethane hot-melt adhesives for wood substrates.

Best poster presentation awarded to LEPABE researcher

LEPABE Researcher Nuno Ratola and Pedro Jiménez-Guerrero (Murcia University) are co-authors in the work entitled "Modelling of Benzo(a)pyrene in SE Spain to determine levels, human health factors and climate change effects", that was awarded best poster presentation.
The work was presented at the 11th International Conference on Air Quality: Science and Application, which was held on March, 12-16th, in Barcelona, Spain.

COST portASAP meeting in Porto

The first COST "portASAP - European network for the promotion of portable, affordable and simple analytical platforms" general meeting is taking place on March, 8-9th at the Axis Hotel, Porto with more than 70 participants from 30 different countries. This COST action is lead by LEPABE's Researcher Guillaume Erny and aims to promote the use of open source hardware as analytical tools and disseminate its use among general public.

LEPABE team awarded 1st prize in the Business Ignition Programme

A team led by LEPABE Research Fellow Luísa Andrade was awarded the 1st prize in the 2nd edition of the Business Ignition Program 2017, promoted by U. Porto Inovação, with the project Portuguese Solar Tiles. This program intends to facilitate the transition of ideas developed in academia into successful business models. Project Portuguese Solar Tiles involves technology developed by LEPABE Senior Researcher Adélio Mendes, which intends to exploit the potential of integrating photovoltaic energy systems into buildings in urban settings to take advantage of the facades and windows.
