The Science & Technology Week 2019 took place at the Department of Chemical Engineering, from November 25 to 29th, with the motto: "Technological advances in emerging areas of chemical, environmental and biotechnology engineering". With the participation of LEPABE and the other research units, high school and university students visited our research laboratories to know more about what we do. Thank you for your visit!
Music and Physics: A tour to Maurice Ravel Artwork

LEPABE, together with other research units from FEUP, supports the Opera Concert “Música e Física Numa Visitação à obra de Maurice Ravel”. This concert will take place on December 5th, 2019, at FEUP’s auditorium and is performed by the orchestra of the Academia and City Opera (OAC).
The OAC orchestra will be directed by conductor Jiří Petrdlík, and will have Adriano Jordão (piano), Ana Maria Pinto (soprano) and Rómulo Assis (violin) as solo artists. Dedicated to the work of composer Maurice Ravel, the concert will be narrated and commented by Prof. João Seixas (Instituto Superior Técnico), who will establish the link between the work of Maurice Ravel and Physics.

BioRemid 2019 conference was a success

The 2nd International Meeting on New Strategies in Bioremediation Processes took place in Porto, on October, 24-25, 2019.
This conference was organized by researchers from LEPABE, LSRE-LCM and CERENA, and counted with 150 researchers and industrial professionals from four continents (Europe, America, Asia and Africa), which shared their work on the field, on a total of more than 135 contributions between oral and poster presentations.
We are thankful to the organizing committee, specially to the members of LEPABE: Prof. Olga C. Nunes, Prof. Nuno Azevedo, Prof. Joana Dias and Dr. José C. Pires and to LEPABE researchers and students involved in the supporting team.
Hurricane HR system featured in Bioénergie international magazine

Members of LEPABE, Prof. Romualdo Salcedo and Júlio Paiva, worked in a new solution to replace the ancient system of cyclones for the company Vert Déshy, France.
This new optimized system Hurricane HR, from Advanced Cyclone Systems (ACS), a spin-off of LEPABE, allowed the company to reduce their emissions from 190 mg/Nm3 to less than 20 mg/Nm3 (below the emission limit of 60 mg/Nm3). This new solution was reported in the number 62 of the Bioénergie international magazine.

LEPABE was present at the Water Festival AQUAPORTO 2019

The 6th edition of the Water Festival Aquaporto entitled ‘Planeta Água’ took place at the City Park of Porto, on 11-13th October, under the organization of the municipal company Águas do Porto.
LEPABE research unit in collaboration with the Chemical Engineering Department (DEQ) of FEUP was present with some experimental setups designed to support the communication about water treatment processes and monitoring of water pollution. A group of researchers from different research units conducted brief scientific demonstrations and helped with the participants’ questions concerning water-related issues.

CVMAR+i project has a newsletter

The research team led by Prof. Luís Melo from LEPABE is one of the many partners of this project. Financially supported by INTERREG V-A Spain – Portugal (POCTEP), this project has now a newsletter where is possible to find recent news about the project and its development.

LEPABE Researchers, Sofia Sousa and Pedro Branco, participated in the 2nd Meeting of COST Action INDAIRPOLLNET "Improving indoor air quality". This meeting took place in September 25-27th, in Porto, Portugal.
Pedro Branco was awarded best oral presentation at INDAIRPOLLNET Early Career Investigators Workshop, that occurred in the first day of the meeting, with the work "Indoor Air Quality in Nursery and Primary Schools: Impacts on Childhood Asthma".

Project Lightwood at London Design Fair

Project Lightwood, involving LEPABE senior researchers Luísa Carvalho, Jorge Martins, Cristina Coelho and Fernão Magalhães, was present at the London Design Fair within the stand of Associative Design and AIMMP (Associação das Indústrias de Madeira e Mobiliário de Portugal).
The products exposed, developed in the scope of the project in cooperation with a design team, are based on a recently patented new technology. The composite materials combine particles of wood or thistle with a polyurethane foam, in order to produce a light but mechanically resistant materials. These properties have drawn the attention of several representatives of European furniture industries.

Patrícia Alves, PhD student in LEPABE's Biotechnology group, participate on the 14th International Triennial Conference on the Science and Technology of Adhesion and Adhesives (Adhesion'19). The conference took place in September 3-5th, 2019, at Bristol Science Centre, Bristol, United Kingdom.
Patrícia was awarded Best Bio Adhesion Poster Presentation with the work “Effect of shear stress on the reduction of bacterial adhesion to antifouling polymers”.

Maria João Romeu and Marisa Gomes, research fellows at LEPABE participated in the Training School "Urethal stents: from modelling to commercialisation", which was held on the Swiss Institute for Translational and Entrepreneurial Medicine (SITEM), University of Bern (Switzerland), from 10 to 11th of september, 2019.
Maria João Romeu was awarded Best Poster Communication in the category of "Solutions against biofilm and encrustation".

Anabela Borges, Luciana Gomes and Jontana Allkja, LEPABE researchers from the Biotechnology group participated on the International Conference Eurobiofilms, which was held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 3 to 6th of september 2019.
Luciana Gomes won an ESMID participant grant and Jontana Allkja was awarded best ECR (Early Career Researcher) offered presentation prize.

Workshop on Energy Storage Solutions
August 9th, 2019
“Energy Storage Solutions” Workshop will be held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto on the 12th of September 2019. This Workshop counts with several renowned speakers in their respective fields and will focus on different solar energy harvesting and storage solutions, from an academic to an industrial point of view. At the end of the presentations, a laboratory visit will take place.

LEPABE Senior Researchers, Adélio Mendes, Joana Dias, Nuno Azevedo and Sebastião Feyo, were invited speakers at the 3rd Doctoral Congress in Engineering (DCE), that took place in June 27-28th, 2019, at FEUP, Porto.
The PhD student of LEPABE, Luís Moreira was awarded Best Oral Communication with his talk on “Liposome-encapsulated Nucleic Acid Mimics (LipoNAMs): a potential novel diagnostic and therapeutic tool”.
About 30 PhD students from LEPABE presented their work at DCE19 either as oral or poster communication.
A special acknowledgement to André Sancho, Fábio Bernardo, Filipa Paulo and Kashif Mushtaq, PhD students from LEPABE, for their effort and work as part as the organization committee.

Patrícia Alves, PhD student of the BEL (Biofilm Engineering Lab) group from LEPABE - FEUP, has just returned from a three week summer course on microbial biofilms held at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE). The summer course explored biofilms on a multidisciplinary scale and involved lecturers and competitively selected participants from over 22 different countries, with Patrícia being the only one selected from Portugal

Pedro Pacheco was awarded "Best Poster Communication"

Pedro Pacheco, research fellow at LEPABE, was awarded "Best Poster Communication" on the International Conference Hyceltec 2019 - VII Symposium on Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Advanced Batteries, with the work "In-situ measurement of vanadium crossover for all-vanadium redox flow battery ". This conference took place in Barcelona from 1 to 3rd of July 2019.

Paints and Coatings Technology Course

LEPABE’s Senior Researcher Fernão Magalhães is coordinating a course on Paints and Coatings Technology, which will take place on September 9 – 17th. This course has the collaboration and support of BASF, together with four Portuguese paint companies and the Portuguese Paints Association (APT).

Knocking on (lighter) wood

Wood composite panels have changed the way we furnish our homes. Albeit the advantages they have, a team of LEPABE researchers developed a new process which solves some of the current limitations of these panels. With a lighter, eco-friendly and equally strong product, there's a new wave of change about to hit the wood industry. Technology developed at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu.

LEPABE Research Unit evaluated as EXCELLENT

LEPABE Research Unit was evaluated with a grade of EXCELLENT by FCT - the Portuguese Agency for Science, Research and Technology. This international evaluation process is part of the pluriannual funding program. With more than 200 researchers, and a total of 56 ongoing projects, LEPABE received the highest rating in all evaluation criteria, and obtained very positive comments from the international panel.
Congrats to all LEPABE members for, once again, achieving this remarkable result!

Cooking a healthier diet

The amount of salt we add to our meals greatly impacts our overall health. Its excessive consumption may lead to severe medical problems and should, therefore, be monitored.
This device allows for a quick and efficient check of salt levels whilst still being cooked, actively contributing to healthier meals! It was developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Porto, namely the Senior Researcher of LEPABE, Arminda Alves.

LEPABE Junior Researcher present at Alzheimer´s and Parkinson´s Diseases Conference

Joana Loureiro, LEPABE Junior Researcher, presented her work on "Liposomes based nanocarriers to transport drugs in AD/PD treatment", at the 14th international conference on Alzheimer´s and Parkinson´s Diseases, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on March 26-31, 2019.
This international conference counted with more than 3800 participants, including many pharmaceutical companies.

LEPABE Senior Researcher participated in Milan International Furniture Fair

A team of LEPABE members, led by Senior Researcher Luísa Carvalho, presented innovative lignocellulosic composites at this year’s edition of Milan International Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milano). The products, developed in the context of project Lightwood in collaboration with a team of designers, are based on a recently patented technology. They combine thistle wood particles with polyurethane foam to obtain a light-weight but mechanically resistant material, which caught the attention of several representatives from the European furniture industry.

LEPABE Senior Researcher participated in workshop about EU funds for Advanced Training
