Prémio Mantero Belard 2021

LEPABE Researchers, Prof. Maria do Carmo Pereira and Dr. Joana Loureiro, are part of the team that was awarded the "Prémio Mantero Belard 2021", in this year edition of "Prémios Santa Casa Neurociências", attributed by Santa Casa da Misericórdia. This award intends to promote scientific or clinical research of neurodegenerative diseases associated with aging, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
This award will support the on-going research done by this consortium, led by Dr. Maria José Diógenes (iMM/Lisbon), under the topic "TAT-TrkB, a novel neuroprotective compound to fight Alzheimer's disease". The new compound showed in preliminary tests the ability to restore the physiological activity of the neurotrophic factor BDNF (endogenous neuroprotective), which is normally diminished in patients with Alzheimer.

Crystals Special Issue on “Advance in Application of Perovskite Materials in Optoelectronic Devices”

Seyedali Emami, researcher at LEPABE, is one of the guest editors of the special issue on “Advance in Application of Perovskite Materials in Optoelectronic Devices” to be published in the scientific journal Crystals (MDPI). This special issue features articles on technical and phenomenological studies on long-term stability, reproducibility, up-scaling and industrialization of perovskite solar cells. The submission deadline is September 30th, 2022.

2D Materials for Biomedical Applications Workshop

The UT Austin Portugal Program, the long-standing Science and Technology Partnership between the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), is very pleased to announce its workshop 2D Materials for Biomedical Applications, that will take place on January 27-28th, as virtual workshop.
Coordinated by Dr. Artur Pinto (LEPABE/FEUP) and Prof. Jean Anne Incorvia (University of Texas at Austin, USA), the workshop brings on board a handful of leading experts across several disciplines from Nanotechnologies to Biomedicine, who will be taking you through the large library of 2D materials available today as well as its application in health and medicine.

European Researchers Night 2021

LEPABE researchers were present at the European Researchers Night, which was held last September, at Castelo da Foz – Forte São João Baptista - Porto.
The researchers presented the project BluEnergy, that aims to develop vanadium flux batteries for energy storage from renewable sources. Visitors were able to see how low cost, high longevity redox drain stacks are being developed and the respective process and technology.
LEPABE acknowledge everyone who visited us and thanks the effort and dedication of the researchers involved in the preparation of the activities.
VISIT TO D. GIOVANNI OPERA, by W.A. MOZART

LEPABE is one of the research units that sponsors the 3rd edition of the Researchers’ Concert, this year under the theme: “VISITAÇÃO À ÓPERA D. GIOVANNI DE W. A. MOZART”.
This concert will take place on November 17th, 2021, at FEUP’s auditorium (21:30 h) and is performed by the orchestra of the Academia and City Opera (OAC). Access to the Auditorium is free, tickets can be collected before the performance at FEUP’s desk office.
The OAC orchestra will be directed by conductor José Ferreira Lobo, and will have six opera singers to interpret various arias of D. Giovanni. This concert will have the special participation of Prof. Júlio Machado Vaz.
This year, a small group of musicians will perform a 15 min pre-concert on DEQ entrance (floor -1), on November 15th, at 12:00 h. Don’t miss it!

LEPABE member is a Highly Cited Researcher 2021

Prof. Manuel Simões, senior researcher of LEPABE, was distinguished as Highly Cited Researcher 2021 by Clarivate - Web of Science.
This is a recognition of the true pioneers in their fields over the last decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1 % by citations for field and year in the Web of Science.
Prof. Manuel Simões received this same distinction last year. However, the 2021 ranking has two more researchers of the Chemical Engineering Department at FEUP and another one from ICBAS, totalizing 4 scientists acknowledged from the University of Porto, in a total of 16 researchers at national level.

AmnisPura in 3rd place of CleanTech Camp

Amnis Pura, a spin-off from LEPABE, participated in the CleanTech Camp with its PSA hydrogen purification technology developed at LEPABE, which is 15% more efficient than other market solutions.
CleanTech Camp is a start-up program organized by EIT InnoEnergy aimed at sustainable solutions. Attendees incorporate various masterclasses and workshops aimed at business creation.
From the 15 start-ups selected for the 6th edition of the program, 6 were selected to present their project at the final event, which took place in Barcelona on September 16th, 2021, where Amnis Pura won the 3rd place.

ERA-NET Project PRESAGE

LEPABE congratulates the team of the Biotechnology group, led by Prof. Luís Melo for the approval of the ERA-NET (European Research Area Networks) project PRESAGE - Potential of wastewater treatment for preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance, organic micropollutants, pathogens and viruses.
New approaches are needed to reduce the emission of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), including micropollutants and pathogens. Different sources contribute strongly to such emissions, which has driven the focus of PRESAGE project on innovative decentralized wastewater treatment (WWT), based on anaerobic and aerobic compact systems. The project has a strong focus on better understanding the relation between the operational parameters of reactors, the microbiological evolution in the system and the development of antimicrobial resistance.
LEPABE team is composed by Luís Melo, Manuel Simões and Ana Pereira from the Biofilm Engineering Lab (BEL), and Carlos Pereira from the Faculty of Sciences-UP, Chemistry Dep. The leading institution is Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, and the other partners of the project are Dresden University of Technology, Laboratoire Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Environnement, Technical University Of Denmark and Universidade de São Paulo.

Dr. Inês Gomes was awarded a "Prince Sultan Water travel grant"

Dr. Inês Gomes, Junior Researcher at LEPABE, was awarded a "Prince Sultan Water Specialist Event Participation Grant" during her participation in the 17th International Conference on Environmental Science & Technology, with the topic: “Are emerging contaminants affecting drinking water microbial biofilms?”.
The conference was held as hybrid event (both virtual and in person at Athens – Greece), from 1st to 4th September, 2021. These grants are awarded to promising early career scientists whose research is focused upon innovative research in water-related topics.

International H2 Summer School

The first international H2 Summer School organized by Professor Adélio Mendes and EMPOWER project will take place from 20th to 24th of September 2021.
This summer school is aimed at science and engineering students and professionals interested in learning more about the hydrogen economy. It includes in depth lectures on hydrogen production, storage and transportation, fuel reforming and fuel cell application. Guest speakers from innovation leaders, such as VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Catator AB (Sweden) and Blue World Technologies (Denmark) will join us and provide lectures on their field of expertise.

Mariana Carneiro, PhD student at LEPABE participated in the 7th Conference of the International Society of Applied Phycology 2021, which was held on-line, from May 15th to August 13th, 2021.
Her presentation, under the topic: “Growth and PSII performance of Nannochloropsis oceanica grown in three different pilot-scale cultivation systems outdoors” was awarded the best student oral presentation in the category of “Junior Applied Phycologyst”.

e-Conference on Innovation in Microbial Control

The first e-Conference on Innovation in Microbial Control will take place online from 7th to 8th October 2021, and is organized by Prof. Manuel Simões and other researchers of the Biotechnology group of LEPABE from the Faculty of Engineering and by researchers of CIQUP from the Faculty of Sciences - University of Porto.
This event aims to establish a network to discuss and share on innovative strategies for microbial control as well as debating the main challenges found in the field. Reputable keynote speakers will join us and share their knowledge and experience (e.g. pioneering initiator of biofilm research Hans-Curt Flemming).

NEVADA present at HiTech 2021

The NEVADA device: Nano-drug dEVice for Alzheimers DiseAse, was one of the eight finalist ideas of the HiTech 2021 course, one of the most prestigious in the field of entrepreneurship in Portugal.
The team of Prof. Maria do Carmo Pereira composed by the researchers Dr. Joana Loureiro, Dr. Maria João Ramalho and the PhD students Stephanie Andrade, Meghna Dabur and Débora Nunes, from LEPABE, presented an implantable, biocompatible and biodegradable device for the treatment of brain diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. The closing session took place on July 14th and is fully available here.

In this episode, Margarida Bastos talks about the development of a product based on essential oils to protect stored cereals such as corn, without resorting to the use of plant protection products, such as fungicides or insecticides.

"Baterias 2030" Public project presentation

"Baterias 2030" aims to decarbonise cities by developing new technologies to generate, store and distribute energy. This project comprises 23 national partners and has a global funding of 8.3 million euros. LEPABE is represented by Professor Adélio Mendes, responsible for developing perovskite solar cells for decentralised energy production and for the new generation of energy storage technologies - Redox-Flow batteries and hydrogen batteries that includes a PEM electrolyser, a PSA and a fuel cell. IMDIS: A teaching tool for air pollution dispersion modeling by Romualdo Salcedo

Professor Romualdo Salcedo, from the Process Systems Engineering group of LEPABE, is author of the book IMDIS: A teaching tool for air pollution dispersion modeling, published by De Gruyter.
This book intends to serve as a reference to follow-up on a better comprehension of air pollution modeling with the aid of hands-on user-friendly software, highlighting the main advantages of using Gaussian dispersion as the main drive to teach this subject. Throughout the book, author Romualdo Salcedo guides readers with an interactive multisource dispersion estimation tool, helping them understand how air dispersion models work.

EUGLOH Summer School in Nutrition and Food Sciences

LEPABE Researcher Belmira Neto, Professor of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department at FEUP, is one of the lecturers at the "EUGLOH Summer School in Nutrition and Food Sciences - The role of the academy to promote health" with the topic: From environmental food print to sustainable procurement in public spaces. Training School - DIY Arduino-based platform for monitoring Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

The COST Action PortASAP, led by Dr. Guillaume Erny, research fellow at LEPABE, is organizing a virtual Training School - DIY Arduino-based platform for monitoring Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), which will be held as online event, on July 1-2 & September 20.
The monitoring of environmental parameters using open-source low-cost portable instrumentation is a key tool to expand the currently-available information. Hence, this training school aims to drive researchers with different backgrounds in the process of building and operate an Arduino-based platform for monitoring Indoor Air Quality.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Nuno Ratola, from LEPABE and Dr. Verónica Pino, from Universidad La Laguna, have seen their work highlighted by the newspaper Canarias7. Their project evaluated the presence of compounds derived from cosmetics and hygiene products in the waters of the Canary Islands and was recently published on the scientific journal Talanta - “Headspace solid-phase microextraction based on the metal-organic framework CIM-80(Al) coating to determine volatile methylsiloxanes and musk fragrances in water samples using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry”

150th anniversary of the birth of Alfredo da Silva

The Amélia de Mello Foundation, promotes, this year, a series of events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Alfredo da Silva, the largest Portuguese industrialist of the 20th century.
On May 12th, 2021, the conference "Chemistry for life" was held in Aveiro. The event was organized by the Department of Chemistry of University of Aveiro, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and APQuímica, and had the participation of the Director of FEUP, Professor João Falcão e Cunha, who highlighted the recent creation of ALiCE, as a large Associate Laboratory in the Chemical Engineering field.
Professor Adélio Mendes, senior member of LEPABE, was also invited to present an energy-related topic entitled: "Energy Technologies: a magical bubbling world"

1st International Solar Power Technologies Conference - SPTech

Several LEPABE's researchers are part of the scientific and organizing committee of the SPTech Conference – Solar Power Technologies, which will be held as online event, from 5th to 8th of July 2021.

Foods special issue on “Application of Innovative Spray Drying Technology on Food Engineering”

LEPABE was granted 4 projects in the call “SISTEMA DE APOIO À INVESTIGAÇÃO CIENTÍFICA E TECNOLÓGICA - PROJETOS ESTRUTURADOS DE I&D&I” from CCDR-N. The projects are:
- 2SMART - engineered Smart materials for Smart citizens, led by LEPABE, with participation of CEFT, LSRE-LCM and i2ADS;
- Healthy Waters - Identification, Elimination, Social Awareness and Education of Water Chemical and Biological Micropollutants with Health and Environmental Implications, led by LSRE-LCM, with participation of LEPABE, CEFT and CIIE;
- HyGreen&LowEmissions ‐ Tackling Climate Change Impacts: the role of Green Hydrogen production, storage and use, led by CEFT, with participation of LEPABE, LSRE-LCM and CEF.UP;
- S4Hort_Soil&Food - Sustainable practices for Soil health & horticultural products improvement in the Entre‐o‐Douro e Minho Region, led by GreenUP, with participation of LEPABE, LSRE-LCM and CIQUP.
With these projects, LEPABE ensures a financial input of 880 000 EUR, for the next 2 years.

2nd DelNAM Summer School "FISHing Bacteria"
May, 4-6, 2021 - DEQ, FEUP
The 2nd DelNAM Summer School "FISHing Bacteria" will take place on the 4th-6th of May 2021 and is organized by the H2020 project DelNAM.
This summer school will include theoretical sessions and hands-on practical sessions on the FISH technique and its applications. The theoretical sessions will take place ONLINE on the first day of the event (May 4th). The practical sessions will happen IN PERSON, at the Department of Chemical Engineering from FEUP (May 5th and 6th), and will include the design of oligonucleotides to target bacteria, standard FISH on planktonic and mixed biofilms, as well as variants including the application of liposomes, microfluidics and spectral image analysis.

4th Doctoral Congress in Engineering – DCE21
June, 28-29, 2021 - Virtual Conference
Several LEPABE's researchers are part of the scientific and organizing committee of the 4th Doctoral Congress in Engineering – DCE21 which will be held on the 28th to 29th of June, 2021 as online event.
Organized by FEUP, DCE21 is an excellent opportunity for doctoral engineering students, to discuss their on-going research with peers, professors and industry/companies and also for potential industry partners to contact a broad audience of engineers which will soon be looking to move on to the industry.
The DCE21 is divided in 14 engineering symposia, with special emphasis on the Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Environmental Engineering symposia.

8th ICEER 2021
September, 13-17, 2021 - Virtual Conference
LEPABE's researchers, Prof. Nídia Caetano and Dr. António Areosa Martins are part of the organizing committee of the 8th International Conference on Energy and Environment Research - ICEER 2021, which will be held as on-line event.
Developing the World in 2021 with Clean and Safe Energy is the main topic of this annual event that discusses current issues related to Energy and the Environment. This event aims to explore emerging technologies and concepts in a collaborative way, bringing together engineers, researchers and professionals from different areas.
LEPABE researchers feature in Stanford ranking

Five researchers from LEPABE are included in the list of the most cited scientists in the world released by Stanford University. The list contains all scientist who are among the top 100,000 across all fields or the top 2% of scientists of their main subfield discipline, according to their composite citation index when self-citations are not included.
The LEPABE members included in the list for career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 are: F. Xavier Malcata, Manuel Simões, Luís M. Madeira, Adélio Mendes and José Carlos Pires. The list for citation impact during the single calendar year 2019 includes the five mentioned names and also the name of Lúcia Santos.

“Women in Science” book

The third edition of the book “Women in Science” was launched on March 8th, 2021, on the occasion of International Women's Day. Published by Ciência Viva, this edition of the book brings together 101 portraits of women researchers from different generations and areas of knowledge, thus paying tribute to Portuguese women scientists, who represent about 45% of the country's total researchers.
The third edition counted with the participation of LEPABE Researcher, Dr. Ana Luísa Gonçalves, who highlighted her work with microalgae for the capture of CO2 and the removal of pollutants from wastewater.

Associate Laboratory status for ALICE approved

ALICE, Associate Laboratory for Innovation in Chemical Engineering, has been approved for Associate Laboratory Status. The ALICE consortium, is composed by CEFT, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM, three R&D Units based at the Department of Chemical Engineering at FEUP.
The Associate Laboratory status is attributed to institutions or consortia of scientific institutions that make institutional commitments to carry out the country's scientific and technological policy objectives, in a very competitive call. The status also grants complementary budget.

SEA+TECH: a new spin-off company from LEPABE

SEAMORETECH, Lda, is the most recent spin-off from FEUP/LEPABE. The company was founded by Sofia Delgado and Eva Sousa, and was created in the beginning of 2021 as outcome of the research work developed by the team of Prof. Adélio Mendes, from the group of Processes, Products and Energy at LEPABE.
As water scarcity is the main challenge of this century, SEA+TECH mission is to develop energy efficient projects for producing fresh water from seawater or waste water using solar energy conversion technologies to supply residential, commercial and industrial applications.

LEPABE Researchers participated in Global Women Breakfast 2021 iniciative

LEPABE Researchers accepted IUPAC's invitation to participate in the Global Women Breakfast, that happened online on February 9th. This event was organized worldwide, with the participation of multiple countries. In Portugal, different institutions accepted the invitation of Sociedade Portuguesa da Química and joined the event online.
At FEUP, the Department of Chemical Engineering, together with research units CEFT, LEPABE and LSRE-LCM, organized a small session where positive testimonies were recorded, focusing on pandemic stories and on how we work to overcome these days.

CROPEO was one of the finalists of Prémio Inovação CA 2020

Project CROPEO was one of the 3 finalists in the “Food, Nutrition and Health” category of the 7th edition of the “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” award sponsored by Crédito Agrícola.
Following the investigation carried out in the project Microprotect, that ended in 2015, arises the CROPEO project, led by Prof. Margarida Bastos, Senior Researcher at LEPABE. This project continued the development of a device that contains essential oils with insecticidal and fungicidal activity, being a sustainable solution for the protection and storage of cereals for long periods of time. This device is already patented in the United States.
Production of ventilators from Sysadvance starts this week

Sysadvance, a spin-off company from FEUP/LEPABE, is producing new ventilators in collaboration with the Portuguese Medical Association to reinforce the intensive care units (ICUs) in Portuguese hospitals.
The ventilator SYSVENT OM1 is the first ventilator certified in Portugal and its production starts this week. The company will produce 35 units to the Portuguese health system (SNS) to help the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Countries such as Czech Republic and Brazil also manifested their interest in acquiring the Portuguese model.

The article “Towards sustainable wine: Comparison of two Portuguese wines” was distinguished with the prize CNOIV 2020 in the category of Economy and Law, instituted by the National Commission of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (CNOIV), operating at the Institute of Vine and Wine, I.P.
This paper, published in 2018 by the Journal of Cleaner Production resulted from the work developed by a team from LEPABE, led by Prof. Nídia Caetano, in collaboration with Sogrape Vinhos company. In this paper a comparative sustainability assessment of two Portuguese wines is performed. The evaluation follows a life cycle perspective and is based on seven sustainability indicators, selected taking into account the main issues pertinent to the wine industry.
Micromachines special issue on “Microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip Applications”
