SYSADVANCE - Sistemas de Engenharia, S.A.
SYSADVANCE, the first spin-off of LEPABE, was founded in 2002 as result of the research work developed at LEPABE by Prof. Adélio Mendes team. The company was founded by Pedro Taveira and José Vale Machado.
SYSADVANCE provides state-of-the-art solutions in Nitrogen, Oxygen, Ozone and Hydrogen on-site generation units for industrial applications. The company is also active in the areas of O2 and breathing air generators for medical applications as well as anesthesia gas recovery.
Advanced Cyclone Systems, S.A.
Advance Cyclone systems (ACS) was founded in 2008 by Romualdo Salcedo (CTO) - Professor and Researcher at LEPABE-FEUP and by Pedro Araújo (CEO), Industrial Engineer from FEUP and MBA from Lisbon University, under Cohitec program from COTEC Portugal, with financial support from Espírito Santo Ventures.
ACS is a company exclusively dedicated to the development and commercialization of high efficiency cyclone systems, worldwide. The company works in a very close cooperation with its clients in order to design custom made cyclone systems that really solve their unmet needs.
Apart from supplying cyclones, ACS has grown to be a turnkey project provider in any part of the world.
BioMode - Biomolecular Determination, S.A.
The company was founded in December 2010 as a result of the research work developed at the University of Minho and LEPABE by Prof. Nuno Azevedo and received financial support from the Inovcapital ACTec venture fund (Portugal Ventures), with mentoring provided by COTEC Portugal.
Biomode is an innovative company in the biotechnology field, where the core activities are focused in the research, development and the commercialization of rapid diagnostic kits based on Peptide Nucleic Acid FISH technology for microbial detection in food and clinical samples.
VisBlue ApS
VisBlue (formerly Fre3nergy) was founded in 2014 as a spin-off company of the University of Aarhus (Denmark) and University of Porto, based on an invention of Prof. Adélio Mendes (FEUP/LEPABE) and Anders Bentien (UAarhus). In late 2014 BOREAN Innovation (www.borean.dk) made an investment in VisBlue which ensured the development of a 3kW/10 kWh redox flow battery.
The company has its first battery installed at Realdania By & Byg in Copenhagen, Denmark's first zero-energy apartment building.
Amnis Pura
Amnis Pura, Lda was founded in 2018, by Dr. Paulo Ribeirinha and Frederico Relvas. The first steps towards creating this company began in 2016, taking advantage of the know-how acquired in the context of EU-funded project "PEMbeyond", led by Prof. Adélio Mendes.
The company designs and produce of tailored solutions for hydrogen production and purification for chemical and energy industries. The company is also involved in the areas of low temperature fuel cell systems. Watch the promotional video here.
Pixel Voltaic
Pixel Voltaic is a Spin-off company from UPORTO created in 2018 for producing energy related technologies. The knowledge gathered by the research done in the laboratories of Prof. Adélio Mendes (FEUP/LEPABE) allowed the creation of this company.
The company´s mission is to promote and enable a quick transition of innovative technologies that have just reached the proof-of-concept into the market, namely technologies related with the production of Dye Sensitized Solar Cells and Perovskite Solar Cells. Watch the promotional video here.
OFRTECH
OFRTECH - Process Intensification, Lda was founded by Dr. António Ferreira in 2019, as a spin-off company from University of Porto, in order to commercialise the patented intellectual property in oscillatory flow reactor (OFR) technology, developed in collaboration with Prof. Fernando Rocha, from the Supramolecular Assemblies group of LEPABE, and Prof. José Teixeira from B. Factory group of CEB - Centre of Biological Engineering, University of Minho.
The company is dedicated to the development and production of oscillatory flow reactors - which can be operating in batch or continuous mode - for mixing intensification of multiphase systems.
SEA+TECH
SEAMORETECH, Lda, a Spin-off FEUP, was created in 2021 as outcome of the research work developed by the team of Prof. Adélio Mendes at LEPABE/FEUP. The company was founded by Sofia Delgado and Eva Sousa.
As water scarcity is the main challenge of this century, SEA+TECH mission is to develop energy efficient projects for producing fresh water from seawater or waste water using solar energy conversion technologies to supply residential, commercial and industrial applications. Carbopora
Carbopora is a Spin-off FEUP founded in 2021 by Tiago Araújo and Telmo lopes. Its creation was motivated by the more than 20 years of experience that Professor Adélio Mendes’ research team (LEPABE) has in gas purification technologies, especially involving membranes.
The company’s mission is to enable the technological transition of new and exciting membrane-based technologies from the lab-scale into the market. As such, its activities are focused on the development, production and commercialization of membrane-based separation units for biogas upgrading, hydrogen purification, CO2 capture from post-combustion processes, oxygen or nitrogen enrichment from the air, among other industrial applications. Halius
Halius is a Spin-off FEUP founded in 2023 by Adélio Mendes, Paula Dias, and Tiago Lagarteira. Its creation resulted from the developments made by European Project 112CO2 (led by LEPABE), which should end in 2024 at TRL4.
The company’s mission is to develop and commercialize a high-power density, high energy efficient catalytic low- and intermediate-temperature methane splitting process to produce dispatchable hydrogen and graphitic carbon (multiwalled carbon nanotubes) from natural gas and biomethane.
Litricity
Litricity is a Spin-off FEUP founded in 2023 by Ulrich Stimming, Marc Henning Diekmann and Adélio Mendes. It resulted from a pioneer work by Prof. Ulrich Stimming, later complemented by a fruitful collaboration between LEPABE and Prof. Ulrich Stimming.
The company’s mission is to develop and commercialize an incredibly powerful liquid battery that can be charged faster than what you have ever experienced for a liquid battery.
